BRONZE versus RESIN BRONZE
A bronze is cast in a foundry. This is a skilled and time consuming process and the metal sculpture produced is virtually indestructible and can be passed from generation to generation. Bronzes have been rescued from the sea after centuries. Detailed descriptions of the process can be found online.
Resin bronze, sometimes mis-leadingly described as "cold cast bronze", is a cast in which the mould is painted with finely ground bronze mixed with resin. It is then filled with almost anything which is inert, often iron filings which are heavy and make the sculpture feel more like real bronze. It can be reinforced with fibre glass and wire. This process does not need special equipment and is much cheaper to produce. It will last until it is dropped.
LIMITED EDITIONS Most bronzes are limited to 10 or 12 casts which makes them collectors’ pieces. Four “artist’s proofs” are sometimes added. When the series is all cast the mould is destroyed.
An Open edition means in theory there is no limit to the number of casts which can be made.
